The Bathroom Maintenance Checklist Every Home Needs
By Elena Marsh··5 min readBathrooms are small, wet, and used multiple times a day — which is why they need a maintenance rhythm rather than the occasional panic clean. Here is the checklist our editors run on a weekly, monthly, and quarterly cadence.
Weekly bathroom checklist
- Wipe down counters, faucets, and the mirror.
- Spray and scrub the toilet bowl, exterior, and base.
- Squeegee shower glass and walls after the last use.
- Replace hand towels and bath mats; launder used ones.
- Empty the trash and wipe the can with a disinfecting spray.
Monthly tasks
- Deep-clean tile grout with a soft brush and a baking soda paste.
- Descale showerheads and faucets with a vinegar soak.
- Wash shower curtains and liners on a warm cycle with a towel for friction.
- Clean exhaust fan covers — dust here is a major contributor to humidity issues.
- Check caulk around tubs and sinks for cracks or mildew.
Quarterly tasks
- Re-caulk any compromised seals before water gets behind tile.
- Inspect under-sink plumbing for slow leaks or moisture.
- Deep-clean drains with baking soda, vinegar, and boiling water.
- Wash bath mats, shower curtains, and replace any worn-out items.
- Review your ventilation — a humid bathroom is a future repair bill.
Ventilation is the secret to a low-maintenance bathroom
Ninety percent of bathroom problems — mildew, peeling paint, soft drywall, musty smell — trace back to humidity. Run the exhaust fan during every shower and for at least twenty minutes after. If you don't have a fan, crack a window.
Products our editors keep on hand
- White vinegar (descaling, glass, mirrors)
- Baking soda (grout, drains, gentle scrubbing)
- Dish soap (general purpose)
- Microfiber cloths (chrome, glass, mirrors)
- A soft-bristle grout brush
- A squeegee — the single best bathroom tool you can own
