Kitchen Cleaning Hacks Our Editors Actually Use

A clean kitchen isn't about heroic weekend deep cleans — it's about small habits that compound. The hacks below are the ones our editors actually use, vetted for real homes with real grease.

Baking soda and vinegar for the sink drain

Pour half a cup of baking soda down the drain, follow with a cup of white vinegar, let it fizz for ten minutes, then flush with boiling water. Done weekly, this prevents most slow drains and keeps odors at bay without harsh chemicals.

Steam-clean the microwave in two minutes

Fill a microwave-safe bowl with one cup of water, two tablespoons of vinegar, and a few lemon slices. Microwave on high for three minutes, then let the steam sit for two more. Wipe the interior with a soft cloth — splatters lift off without scrubbing.

Cut grease with dish soap and warm water

For range hoods, cabinet fronts near the stove, and backsplash tile, a simple solution of warm water and a few drops of grease-cutting dish soap outperforms most specialty sprays. For stubborn buildup, add a tablespoon of baking soda to make a paste.

    Refresh the fridge with vanilla

After wiping fridge shelves with a baking soda solution, dab a cotton ball with a few drops of vanilla extract and leave it on a shelf. The smell is subtle and pleasant — much better than the medicinal aroma some commercial deodorizers leave behind.

Shine stainless steel with the grain

Spray a soft cloth (not the appliance) with a 50/50 mix of water and white vinegar. Wipe with the grain of the steel, then buff dry with a microfiber cloth. For extra shine, follow with a tiny amount of olive oil on a fresh cloth.

Run an empty dishwasher cycle monthly

Place a dishwasher-safe cup of white vinegar on the top rack and run a hot cycle with no detergent. This dissolves mineral buildup, cleans the spray arms, and dramatically improves the smell of the appliance.

    The "five-minute reset" rule

Before bed, set a five-minute timer and reset the kitchen: load the dishwasher, wipe the counters, put cloth napkins in the laundry basket. Five minutes a night beats a four-hour Saturday cleanup every time.
